Product description

Author: Krystyna Gutowska- Dudek

The polish portrait. Tradition and historical awareness is a carefully prepared album concerning the Gallery of the Polish Portrait, made available to the public in 1963, which soon will be closed. The author, Krystyna Gutowska-Dudek, a longstanding caretaker of the collections of paintings at the Wilanów Museum, in the introduction traces the history of the gallery from the times, when the museum was opened by Stanisław Kostka Potocki. Every portrait, presented in miniature and on a full-page reproduction, is accompanied by the author's note, devoted to the portrayed personage, sometimes enriched with an anecdote. It can be said, that it is not only an album devoted to painting, but also a lavishly illustrated textbook about the history of Poland from the 16th to the 19th century.
